1963 proved to be an anti-climax as Sands clinched the Division 2 title only for the League to announce that due to restructuring of the divisions, there would be no promotion and relegation that year. Ironically Sands would make it into the top flight two years later when the breakaway South Westmorland League was formed.

Sands trailed in third place for much of the season, and it was not until late August that a sequence of five wins put them in pole position. Despite losing to Leven Valley late on, a last day win at Appleby secured the title. Key to success was the George Bowker-Brian Seddon bowling attack, whilst Tony Kellett, Jack Holliday and Seddon, demonstrating his all-round ability, scored most of the runs.

The following year, Sands created history by winning the first ever Westmorland League cup competition.
