Sands joined the Westmorland League in 1952, having previously played in the Lancaster and District League from 1929 until the start of the Second World War. In their first season they won eight out of the first nine matches and were top of Division 3 for most of the year. However, four defeats in the remaining seven matches saw them eventually finish fourth.

There was to be no repeat of the this late season collapse in 1953 as Sands stormed to the title on the back of nine consecutive wins from May to August. In all, twelve matches were won; the largest a 153 run defeat of Arnside A, and the closest, a two wicket victory at home to Grasmere when chasing 24.

Veteran Billy Burrow (who played in the District League in the 30s) scored most runs with 246, well supported by Tommy Whiteside with 202. Bert Sykes and Geoff Morrow were the main bowlers taking 33 and 31 wickets respectively. Gren Burrow, who won the divisional batting award, made the season's top score, 79 not out against Arnside A, whilst Sykes had the remarkable figures of 7-8 from eight overs against the same opposition.
